Wrong Fuel in a Ute, 4WD or Tow Vehicle

Quick answer: most utes and 4WDs in Australia run on diesel, so the usual mistake is petrol in a diesel tank. Large tanks, long-range tanks and towing raise the stakes. Don’t start the engine, unhitch safely if you’re towing, and get a professional drain before you go anywhere.

Why utes and 4WDs are a special case

  • Big tanks: many hold 80 litres or more, and long-range or auxiliary tanks hold even more. That’s more fuel to drain and dispose of.
  • Modern common rail diesels: high-pressure systems are very sensitive to petrol.
  • Towing and touring: a caravan or trailer makes moving the vehicle harder, and you may be far from help.
  • Shared fleet use: work utes are often driven by several people, some used to petrol cars.

If you’re at the pump

  1. Don’t start the engine or switch on the ignition.
  2. Tell the station staff.
  3. If you’re towing, chock the trailer or caravan wheels and unhitch only if it’s safe and you have help.
  4. Move the vehicle in neutral with help, if needed, to clear the pump.
  5. Call a specialist and tell them the vehicle type, tank size and whether there’s an auxiliary tank.

Dual and auxiliary tanks

If your vehicle has more than one tank, work out which tank the wrong fuel went into and whether the system has switched between tanks. Tell the technician, because both tanks and the transfer system may need attention.

In regional or remote areas

Mobile wrong fuel services are concentrated in cities. In regional areas:

  • ask the roadhouse or servo for local mechanics who can drain fuel
  • call your roadside provider about towing to the nearest capable workshop
  • don’t be tempted to drive “to the next town”

If you’re stopped at the roadside rather than at a servo, follow RACV’s car breakdown guide for staying safe while you wait.

Costs

Expect a larger vehicle and bigger tank to cost more than a small car, because there’s more fuel to remove and dispose of. See what affects the price.

Preventing it

  • Put a “DIESEL ONLY” sticker on or near the filler.
  • Brief everyone who drives a shared or work vehicle.
  • Be extra careful at truck stops with multiple pump types.
  • Read common reasons wrong fuel is added.

Frequently asked questions

Is petrol in a diesel ute worse than in a car?

The damage process is the same, but big tanks mean more fuel to remove, and towing loads put extra stress on a contaminated system.

Can a mobile service drain a dual-tank 4WD?

Yes. Tell them about auxiliary or long-range tanks so they bring enough capacity and allow extra time.

What if I misfuel far from town?

Don’t start the engine. Call a specialist to check whether they cover your area, and arrange a tow if not. Read the Christmas road trip checklist for planning tips.
